About Tiling

Tiles are typically thin, square coverings made from hard-wearing materials like stone, ceramic, glass or metal. They are usually fixed in place in different combinations to cover floors, walls or roofs. Tiles can range from simple square tiles to complex mosaics, depending on the location, material and idea. Tiling is subsequently the act of placing tiles. Although tiling is a standard DIY project for many people around the world, it is also often done by professionals, especially if the design is more complex and intricate.

The world tile comes from the Latin word tegula, which means a roof tile composed of fired clay.

Is Tiling difficult?

Throughout the years TV commercials have made it seem like placing ceramic tiles in your home is one of the easiest DIY projects you can undertake. Although you can certainly do it on your own, tiling isn’t always as easy as it seems. To put it in simple terms, laying tiles is easy, but laying tiles well is difficult and takes a certain level of expertise.

If you’re looking to place tiles in your home, there are certainly a few things that you should take into consideration. The first being which rooms need tiling? Although this might not seem like a big deal, it actually plays a big part in determining how difficult it’s going to be. If you’re a complete beginner, then it might be a good idea to start off in dry rooms. Making the floor of your shower completely waterproof can drive a beginner crazy which is why it’s best to leave them to professionals. Floors are also easier to tile than walls because of slippage.

In general, laying tiles can be easy, as long as you start off slow and build yourself up. A good beginner’s tip is to start from the most out-of-the-way room or area. This will give you time to practice and get better before starting to work on the main rooms of your home.

What’s the best Tile material?

Tile is a great flooring material, especially for high-traffic areas in your home, that can last years if maintained and placed properly. However the question is, what’s the best material to use? Unfortunately, there isn’t one right answer to this question. Different materials have different benefits and it all depends on what you need them for and which room you’re going to use them in.

Clay tiles are typically the best choice when it comes to kitchens, bathrooms and other areas where you’d expect moisture to build up. The reason behind this is that clay is more water-resistant compared to other materials.

For the higher-traffic areas of your home you should consider opting for some natural stone tiles. Granite, slate and marble are all great durable choices that will last for years if taken care of properly.

Can I take Tiling lessons?

You definitely can! Although many claim that tiling is very simple and something that you can learn on your own, that’s not always the case. If you want to learn how to properly do it then it might be a good idea to sign up for tiling lessons.
