Special education is the practice of teaching children in a way that accommodates their differences, disabilities and any special needs they might have. A child has special educational needs when they have a disability or learning problem that makes it more difficult for them to learn compared to other children their age. The problems could vary from issues with behaviour, communication, adapting to school work etc.

Are special education classes separate from typical classroom education?

Depending on the problem or disability a child has, they can either be placed in a special classroom full time, or they can still attend regular classes with extra help or modifications added on the side to assist them. This decision can be taken with the help of a specialist and after discussing what will be best for the child. In some cases children just need some extra attention, while in others they require a fully personalised learning program.

How to identify that a child needs special education?

Some children are easily identified due to their medical history. They could have birth defects, intellectual disabilities, visual or hearing impairment or anything of the sort. However, for many other students, they might be struggling with disabilities that are harder to notice at first glance. One of the main methods used to identify them is the discrepancy model.
