Improvisation, also regularly referred to as simply improv, is a form of live performance or live theatre in which most or all of what is performed is unplanned or unscripted. The genre of improv is usually comedy, however it isn’t restricted to one genre only. Often, the dialogue, action, story and characters are created on the spot with the performers drawing ideas from one another. In other situations, the improvisers will take suggestions from the audience or draw inspiration from other sources in order to get started.

The unique part about improv comedy is that once you see a performance, that’s it, there will never be another show that goes exactly the same.

Improv comedy and Standup comedy are different entertainment acts that aim to achieve the same results - making the audience laugh. The main difference between the two is that improv comedians go with the flow and base their jokes on what's happening at the moment while stand up comics usually follow a script.

Although they do differ, the two genres naturally have a lot in common and performers often mix them in together. Many stand ups, especially the more experienced comedians, don’t follow a word-by-word script. Although they do prepare and rehearse most of their stories, they often change and adapt parts depending on the reaction of the audience. Performing live is stressful and being able to adapt and improvise on the spot are very important skills in order to become a successful stand up or improv comedian.

Becoming a comedian isn’t easy and it takes a great sense of humour, confidence and a lot of practice. Regardless if you’re looking to make a career out of it or if you simply want to try it out for fun, there are different steps involved. The easiest way to begin is to start going to improv shows. Attending live performances by other amateurs or experienced comedians will allow you to see various techniques in action and identify common traits that you can use.

Once you’ve gathered some initial information, the next best step to take is to take an improv class. The best way to join the world of improvisational theatre and learn is to simply join a class. Most of the techniques you’ll learn in improv class can be applied to stand up, drama and many other genres, which is why most acting schools offer improv classes.

Аfter you’ve spent enough time practising and learning, the next step is auditioning for an improv group. Most big cities have an established comedy scene, and becoming a member is the best way to quickly improve and start performing in front of live audiences.

If the city you live in doesn’t offer improv classes or you simply prefer working in a one on one environment, then private tutoring might be the solution for you.
