About GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations, simply referred to as the GRE, is a standardised test administered by the Educational Testing Service and serves as an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in Canada and the United States. The goal of the exam is to assess and compare applicants’ qualifications and how prepared they are for graduate-level academic work.

The exam was first created in 1936 as a joint experiment in higher education by four Ivy League universities - Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia. In 1948 the GRE was taken by over 45 000 students applying to over 500 colleges.

What does the GRE exam consist of?

The GRE exam is a multiple choice, computer-based test that includes questions that closely reflect the kind of thinking a student will need to succeed in today’s demanding graduate school programs. The test format is fairly lenient compared to other exams and it allows students to skip back and forth between questions and focus on the ones they want to answer first. The exam measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills. All of this is covered in three separate sections: analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning.

Analytical Writing - the analytical writing assessment, also known as the essay section, measures whether students can articulate their thoughts and responses to complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. Being able to form a well-articulated answer to unfamiliar topics is key to doing well in Analytical Writing. During this section students will be asked to analyse an issue and then analyse an argument.

Verbal Reasoning - the verbal section of the GRE tests students ability to analyse written material. The questions appear in several formats, the first being text completion. Here students have to fill in the blank spaces in order to complete sentences. The next part is sentence equivalence which requires students to fill in a single blank with two choices that create two coherent sentences that are logically similar in meaning.

Last but not least, the last possible format included in verbal reasoning is reading comprehension. Here questions are based on passages of one or more paragraphs that develop an explanation or argument on a topic

Quantitative Reasoning - the last part of the exam tests students' basic quantitative skills as well as their ability to reason and solve problems. Many of the questions in this part will cover basic algebra, geometry and arithmetic.

How to prepare for the GRE?

The GRE is a tough exam that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Just like with any other exam, preparation time depends on the individual, however the standard is usually about 3 months. Developing a study schedule and sticking to it is key when it comes to the GRE. Solving practice exams is a great way to get accustomed to the types of questions students will see on the actual exam and it also helps with the stress of not knowing what to expect.
