About Nail Design Training

Nail design, also referred to as nail art is a creative way to paint, decorate and enhance nails. Typically a cosmetologist who focuses on the hands is usually referred to as either a manicurist or a nail technician. Manicures are a type of beauty treatment that shape and polish nails. After these procedures, nail technicians can also stylize nails by colouring them, changing their size using gels and creating intricate designs.

What do Nail Designers do exactly?

The tasks of a nail designer vary. Usually they’ll start by soaking the client’s hands and massaging them with a bit of lotion. After that they’ll clean, shape and polish the nails. Depending on the needs and wants of the client, there are a number of other things they can wish to get done. They can get gels brushed onto their natural nails in three layers, which later on hardens under a UV lamp. This is used to achieve a more natural looking alternative to acrylic nails.

Another popular choice many people go for is a french manicure. Here the nail is colored and painted white at the tips to create a natural, strong and healthy nail. Furthermore, if the client is preparing for a special event or just feels like adding a bit of colour to their life, they can choose to get their nails painted in various fantastical designs and even get jewels glued onto them.

A nail technician's job varies greatly from day to day. It can go from a simple clean up to creating intricate and complicated designs entirely depending on what the client wants.

In order to be a certified nail technician/designer you need specialised training and licensing. There are many programs to choose from nationwide. Earning a manicurist certificate usually can take up to six months or a year depending on the course you choose. Apart from completing hands-on training, people who decide to obtain a certificate in nail design might also take courses such as health, manicuring techniques, how to start your own business and local laws and regulations.

Is training to be a Nail Designer a good idea?

As with any industry, there are many benefits to becoming a professional nail designer, but you have to decide for yourself if it's something that will fit you. One of the biggest benefits is that it’s a growing industry. More and more people around the world are going in to get their nails done. Due to the large influx of people, this makes the job very social as well. It’s a great way of not only learning a skill, but also meeting many new people on a daily basis. Apart from that, courses and training programmes tend to be affordable and fairly quick to compete when compared to others.
