After achieving QTS in 1999, I taught in several primary schools for five years, covering all ages (from Nursery to Year 6) and a wide range of abilities (from working towards level 1 up to level 6), in the full range of core and foundation subjects. However, having a predominantly financial/ numerical background, I decided to focus my teaching on mathematics and commenced teaching mathematics in secondary schools from September 2004, covering a wide range of abilities from below NC level 3 to GCSE Higher level.
From May 2007 to August 2019, I was employed by Kip McGrath (Keighley), tutoring students (during evenings and on Saturdays) in Maths (aged 6 to 18 years, at KS1 level up to GCSE Higher level), English (aged 6 to 11 years, at KS1 &2) and in verbal and non-verbal reasoning, in preparation for 11+ High School Entrance Exams. This involved supporting students in small groups working on individual, predominantly computer-based, learning programmes, to enable them to catch-up or improve their skills in specific areas, whilst working towards their personal targets/ goals, e.g. in KS2 SATs, 11+ Entrance Exams or GCSE exams. This experience inspired me to set up my own private tutoring business, which I have been running since April 2014, providing tuition to individual students in maths (aged 7 – 18+), English (ages 7-13), preparing students (aged 9/12) for local High School Entrance Exams and preparing adult learners for Functional Skills exams in both Literacy and Numeracy.
Having studied many courses covering a wide range of disabilities, including ASD, Dyslexia, ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder, I believe I have a good understanding of, and empathy for, students with SEND and SEMH. To this end, I have taught many students with a range of learning difficulties/ barriers to learning and feel that I have made a considerable difference to each student’s enjoyment of mathematics and life-outcomes. I believe that my own enjoyment of learning enables me to encourage and motivate others to successfully engage in the learning process.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I have delivered many lessons via Skype and Zoom and feel that I have become confident and competent in using these platforms for teaching students remotely and would be happy to continue to do so if required.
I have over forty years' experience of private tuition to students aged 2 to adult. I have taught maths and English to all ages, including preparing students for entrance exams. I also teach science up to KS3. I have worked with those for whom English is not their first language, to help them improve their skills. I also have extensive experience of working with students with various kinds of special educational need such as autism, ADHD, delayed development, etc.
I take pride in creating a programme of work which addresses the needs of each individual and helps them to build their confidence as well as competence.
I usually work in my home but can also offer online sessions. As I am moving to a new area, I am currently only taking online students. This will change once I move.

I have over 10 years experience in education. I am currently a primary school teacher and a Literacy Leader. I have taught in Year 6 for years and have a wealth of experience in preparing children for their SATs in KS2 and KS1. I am creative and ensure that my approaches are suitable for all. It was a long journey, from Sidmouth to Halifax via Singapore, Greece, Spain, Finland, Brunei, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Libya. I have worked for the military (5 years), oil and gas industry (13 years), academic institutions (15 years) and other stuff including preparation for English GCSE, UCLES and IELTS exams (the missing years). I spent the last 12 years of my career working as an English lecturer at Tampere University in Finland. Whilst there, we had the time and opportunity to organise the thesis-writing courses online, so by the time Covid arrived and everyone went into the remote 'online teaching' mode, our courses and materials were already established and ongoing. Covid allowed us to tweak the methodology and presentation tools, so that I now have a tried and tested method for teaching academic writing online, which is what I now specialise in. I also offer a proofreading service using a similar approach, which is also very effective.
So, if you have to write an English article or text, or if you want to generally improve your English writing and presentation skills, please get in touch. The first online lesson will be a GTKY session (free) during which we can get to know each other and set some parameters and targets for the course; much better than trying to explain it all in writing. I am a full-time Primary Teacher with a mathematics specialism. When not in my classroom, I offer online lessons for all primary-aged children in subjects ranging from Maths, English and Science. I am down to earth and very approachable by both children and adults. I believe learning should be relatable, memorable and most importantly, fun. Each of my lessons build on each other to enable progression and sustained learning through different modes of teaching.

I provide online tutoring with entails the use of a visualiser, visual manipulatives (maths) and online teacher resources to provide targeted support.
What would my first session look like? I often use the first session as a get to know you session along side a small 'quiz'. This is so there is mutual respect and tust between myself and the tutee as I beleive it is so crutial that children feel comfortable in asking questions about their learning without hesitation. This session also facilitates the next learning step for the subsequent lesson as gaps in understanding can be identified and targeted.

As a professional qualified teacher I have worked in a wide range of educational establishments teaching various levels of ability and students with disabilities for decades. I have successfully tutored 121 and taught English to small group workshops in different environments. I’m looking into studying English as a foreign language (TESOL) at University and wanting to gain some experience in teaching before i start my degree. I haven’t always been an exam and book person but with the right teaching i found my own way. I would have to get to know my student to see what style of work is most effective for them as everyone works differently. Always happy to give positive corrections and communicate to the young person about what they could work on.
I have been teaching for 10 years in Harrogate. My passion lies in the fun, play based learning, which engages children and accelerates learning. Our learning will take place outside as much as possible. Before sessions commence, I will have a detailed discussion with the child's parents, to gather as much information as possible, and so that I can tailor our learning to a theme which suits a child's interest.
