I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and a PGDE in Secondary English from The University of Edinburgh. I have extensive experience working with young people in a variety of educational settings, including as a teaching assistant in mainstream secondary schools, SEN schools, and primary schools. I’ve also taught English as a foreign language in Germany.
In addition to my classroom experience, I have two years of online tutoring experience, supporting students from primary to secondary levels. I tutor primary level, GCSE, A-Level, and the Scottish curriculum (BGE, National 5, Highers, and Advanced Highers). I also offer 11+ preparation.
I provide tutoring both online and in person for those within my local area. I hold a full PVG Disclosure Scotland certificate.

I am a dedicated teacher who has grown in all aspects of teaching since embarking on my career. I have risen to the challenges of teaching and believe that all children can reach their learning potential.
As a tutor, I believe in working on a personalised course of study working through use of past exam papers and interview questions, teaching students to answer the questions well and grow in confidence.
I have successfully coached children through 7+ 11+ and 13+ exams including exams to scholarship level. Tutor Experience
I am a 1 to 1 and online tutor working with students in preparation for Independent School Entrance examinations at 7+, !1+,13+ along with the 11+ Examinations for Grammar Schools. I support children across the Primary Curriculum supporting their understanding to boost confidence and prepare them for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 SATS.
I also tutor Students learning English as a Second Language preparing them for English Proficiency Examinations including English conversation, Reading and writing.

My teaching generally focuses on argument and essay writing. This develops students critical reasoning and argumentative skills, both improving exam performance and the elements of the subjects which are most transferrable.
I have strong experience both as a tutor, and more generally, having been a professional sports coach, and having taught English in Germany. I am therefore well placed to tailor my teaching to the specific academic aims of my students.
I have been a private tutor for nearly six years for multiple companies - both in person and online. I have hosted exchange programmes to help students with English as a foreign language. I have helped to run summer schools. I have been educated at two Russell Group universities: my undergraduate degree in English Literature and History was acquired from the University of Exeter, while my postgraduate degree in English PGCE with QTS was acquired from the University of Oxford. I have been teaching English in a state comprehensive school for nearly four years, in which I have taught/still am teaching KS3 English, GCSE English (both Language and Literature), and A Level English Language and Literature (all with AQA). I specialise in teaching English to any secondary aged students; however, I have experience in teaching the eleven plus and am also able to help KS2 students with preparation for English at secondary school. I could tutor locally in Witney; however, due to my long working hours, online tutoring is preferable.

About Me: Experience & Interests
Having qualified as a teacher in 2004, I have been teaching at Secondary level (including A Level) for 16 years. My first two years in the profession were spent teaching in Bassaleg School in Newport before moving to Oxfordshire 14 years ago, to teach in a comprehensive school in Abingdon. In 2008, I became Head of English, a role I held for 6 years prior to having children. I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years, with tutees ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. My area of interest and expertise for tutoring has mainly focused on KS4, but I also have experience in tutoring younger students for their Year 6 SATS Exam and for the 13+ Grammar School examination. In my role as Head of English, I oversaw Literacy across the Curriculum Interventions and Developments as well as mentoring trainee interns and delivering professional development sessions to newly qualified teachers. As a mentor for the PGCE teacher-training course at The University of Oxford, I have also regularly assisted the university in interviewing applicants for their course. As an examiner for AQA Literature, I have had training in understanding the requirements of the new 2015 specification, as well as three years’ experience of grading exam scripts. I am also an assessor for the National Foundation for Educational Research, an independent provider of research in education. I have experience in teaching various exam boards including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel and IGCSE. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin and piano, going to the gym, swimming and skiing.

Approaches to Tutoring
Different students require different approaches to learning and so I work hard to tailor my sessions according to the needs of the student. In addition to one-to-one online tutoring, I also offer paired tuition (with someone of a similar age and ability) and small group tuition (Maximum of 6 per class). I offer term-time and holiday lessons: one-off sessions, short term or long term according to the needs of the student. Please send me a message if you would like further information and prices. I am an experienced writer and journalist who re-trained as a primary teacher. I have particular experience teaching KS2, preparing youngsters for KS2 SATs and the transition to secondary education.
I enjoy teaching English in a creative way, which children enjoy and engage with, and have had really positive results with my maths classes.
My style is to integrate philosophical discussion into my lessons, which are child-led - taking children on a learning journey which they themselves direct.
I have a particular interest in advising and helping in home-school environments - this can be in core subjects or cross-curricula, where I plan lessons for one child or a group of learners.
