I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and a PGDE in Secondary English from The University of Edinburgh. I have extensive experience working with young people in a variety of educational settings, including as a teaching assistant in mainstream secondary schools, SEN schools, and primary schools. I’ve also taught English as a foreign language in Germany.
In addition to my classroom experience, I have two years of online tutoring experience, supporting students from primary to secondary levels. I tutor primary level, GCSE, A-Level, and the Scottish curriculum (BGE, National 5, Highers, and Advanced Highers). I also offer 11+ preparation.

I have been a private tutor for nearly six years for multiple companies - both in person and online. I have hosted exchange programmes to help students with English as a foreign language. I have helped to run summer schools. I have been educated at two Russell Group universities: my undergraduate degree in English Literature and History was acquired from the University of Exeter, while my postgraduate degree in English PGCE with QTS was acquired from the University of Oxford. I have been teaching English in a state comprehensive school for nearly four years, in which I have taught/still am teaching KS3 English, GCSE English (both Language and Literature), and A Level English Language and Literature (all with AQA). I am currently taking part in a support club for younger children that have trouble reading. I believe it is extremely important to help others in need and transfer knowledge to those younger than me. Seeing the difference and improvement I can make in someone’s life is the most rewarding feeling I can think of. The program takes place every week, and the progress which my students make is something I am very proud of.
I have taken it upon myself to talk to them about what they found so off putting about reading, pick an engaging book, find out about their interests etc., to make sure that it doesn't feel like a burden but rather a fun and valuable experience. This helped me create a friendly environment and I was able to see a big improvement in both their reading skill and their attitude towards it. I believe that knowing when or how to approach an issue, as well as talking about things that might present an obstacle is of essence to success of any kind. Communication, however, matters not just for approaching any existing issues, but also letting a student know that you are a friendly face that they can speak to and feel comfortable around.
I have been helping neurodivergent students younger than myself with their maths studies, for one hour every week, for over a year. As a mentor I have learned the necessity of being able to put yourself into someone else's position and consider things from their point of view. Understanding how someone else is feeling and being patient with them, helping them overcome an issue is the most important and sometimes challenging part of mentoring.
In the past year I have also individually done tutoring sessions for GCSE higher maths online, and as I have achieved a 9 in my maths GCSE, I was happy to pass on the knowledge.
About Me: Experience & Interests
Having qualified as a teacher in 2004, I have been teaching at Secondary level (including A Level) for 16 years. My first two years in the profession were spent teaching in Bassaleg School in Newport before moving to Oxfordshire 14 years ago, to teach in a comprehensive school in Abingdon. In 2008, I became Head of English, a role I held for 6 years prior to having children. I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years, with tutees ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. My area of interest and expertise for tutoring has mainly focused on KS4, but I also have experience in tutoring younger students for their Year 6 SATS Exam and for the 13+ Grammar School examination. In my role as Head of English, I oversaw Literacy across the Curriculum Interventions and Developments as well as mentoring trainee interns and delivering professional development sessions to newly qualified teachers. As a mentor for the PGCE teacher-training course at The University of Oxford, I have also regularly assisted the university in interviewing applicants for their course. As an examiner for AQA Literature, I have had training in understanding the requirements of the new 2015 specification, as well as three years’ experience of grading exam scripts. I am also an assessor for the National Foundation for Educational Research, an independent provider of research in education. I have experience in teaching various exam boards including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel and IGCSE. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin and piano, going to the gym, swimming and skiing.

Approaches to Tutoring
Different students require different approaches to learning and so I work hard to tailor my sessions according to the needs of the student. In addition to one-to-one online tutoring, I also offer paired tuition (with someone of a similar age and ability) and small group tuition (Maximum of 6 per class).
