I am an enthusiastic and dedicated English tutor, examiner and writer. I offer stimulating and enjoyable lessons via video call which build upon each student's strengths to enable them to overcome their difficulties with greater confidence. I find tutoring immensely rewarding and strive to help all my students meet their full potential regardless of their ability. I have experience teaching SEN students, particularly those with autism, dyslexia and manual difficulties. To date I have had 100% pass rate and all of my students have achieved grades 9-4 (A*- C). I am a member of the Tutors Association and have a current DBS Enhanced certificate .
I understand fully the advantages and disadvantages of studying from home as I have gained all of my qualifications through distance learning, including my PhD. I also home schooled my son from the age of 4-16. I have been a judge of the BBC Radio 2 '500 Words' children's short story competition and a volunteer for the National Literacy Trust's "Summer Reading Challenge" for children. I have a research interest in Thomas Hardy and write poetry and English study guides.

I currently work as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) teacher within a specialist resource base, supporting children with complex communication and interaction needs. I qualified as a primary teacher in 2023, with a specialism in SEND, and have since worked with children across a range of ages and additional needs in specialist settings.
My passion for supporting children with SEND is deeply personal—my older brother has a diagnosis of autism, which has inspired my commitment to helping children and young people with autism reach their full potential. About Me: Experience & Interests
Having qualified as a teacher in 2004, I have been teaching at Secondary level (including A Level) for 16 years. My first two years in the profession were spent teaching in Bassaleg School in Newport before moving to Oxfordshire 14 years ago, to teach in a comprehensive school in Abingdon. In 2008, I became Head of English, a role I held for 6 years prior to having children. I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years, with tutees ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. My area of interest and expertise for tutoring has mainly focused on KS4, but I also have experience in tutoring younger students for their Year 6 SATS Exam and for the 13+ Grammar School examination. In my role as Head of English, I oversaw Literacy across the Curriculum Interventions and Developments as well as mentoring trainee interns and delivering professional development sessions to newly qualified teachers. As a mentor for the PGCE teacher-training course at The University of Oxford, I have also regularly assisted the university in interviewing applicants for their course. As an examiner for AQA Literature, I have had training in understanding the requirements of the new 2015 specification, as well as three years’ experience of grading exam scripts. I am also an assessor for the National Foundation for Educational Research, an independent provider of research in education. I have experience in teaching various exam boards including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel and IGCSE. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin and piano, going to the gym, swimming and skiing.

Approaches to Tutoring
Different students require different approaches to learning and so I work hard to tailor my sessions according to the needs of the student. In addition to one-to-one online tutoring, I also offer paired tuition (with someone of a similar age and ability) and small group tuition (Maximum of 6 per class). I offer term-time and holiday lessons: one-off sessions, short term or long term according to the needs of the student. Please send me a message if you would like further information and prices. I am an experienced, qualified teacher and tutor of 20+ years. I am educated to master's level and have expereince teaching and tutoring primary and preparatory school pupils (ages 6 - 13). I can provide home learning support in all primary subjects as well as specialist English tuition. I have had success preparing pupils for SATs and entrance examinations for independent schools, particularly in Cambridge, (United Kingdom), though I am also familiar with Cheltenham schools. I tailor sessions to the individual child's interests and needs, and work with pupils and parents to meet their desired goals, whether these be to build confidence, to develop creativty or to begin entrance exam preparation in earnest. I usually set a short piece of homework at the end of each session and review this with the pupil in the following session.
I am currently working only online via Skype and Zoom to deliver lessons but will also consider other mutually agreeable, secure platforms.
My basic rate is £30 per hour but this may be adjusted up to £35 or down to £25 depending upon the age and number of students, the work involved and any fees charged to me to facilitate tutoring.
Return to School or Transition Support - I can provide educational support for children returning to school in September after a significant time out of a formal educational environment. I can also support those children making important transitions between key stages or who are adjusting to the pace of work in a new school.
Manuscripts and dissertations (master's level) - I offer a proof-reading (typing, spelling and punctuation) and basic editing (grammar, consistency and clarity) service and quote for this on an individual basis.

II) MY STORY SO FAR
Now for the fuller version! :) My successful teaching career so far has saw me manage some of the most challenging of UK’s classrooms for the past 20 years’+. During this time, I have consistently been ranked an inspirational grade-one “outstanding” teacher in my present school, and have delivered KS3, GCSE and A Level English, History, and Maths in the secondary and sixth-form sectors, far surpassing students’ target grades and national pass rates. Moreover, due to these outstanding results and teaching innovation that led to my lessons cited in Ofsted reports for their commitment to Equality and Diversity, I have served as Head of Department; helping us to be awarded an internal grade 1 “outstanding” rating during my tenure.
Whilst in this position, I also became Lead Internal Verifier for NEAs across the department; Lead for UCAS Applications, managing the pathway for students into top universities including Oxford and Cambridge; Lead for Departmental Higher Education Provision, in which I crafted curricula for a variety of degree level courses; and Learning Mentor for the “Gifted and Talented” Programme, that saw me guide some of the UK’s most deprived learners to become the first in their families to go to university-work which is still very close to my heart.
Furthermore, I have extensive experience of driving up educational standards within schools and colleges. Thus, as an Advanced Teaching Practitioner-tasked with developing best teaching practice, I’ve led Action Research Projects yielding invaluable data on topics such as: whether computer games can be used productively in the classroom; can Miro whiteboards better engage kinaesthetic learners, and how to increase achievement rates of learners with Protected Characteristics. Thus, through such incisive research as well as mentoring colleagues, this role saw me play a decisive role in turning around failing cohorts in some of the UK’s most challenging classrooms, improving life-chances by engaging disenchanted students and improving poor behaviour.
Furthermore, as well as my time as an examiner for a variety of GCSE/A Level exam boards, I have shown myself to be an inspirational mentor to both students and new entrants into the teaching profession. Therefore, as a teaching mentor to many new entrants on the PGCE programme, I am proud to have helped develop the next generation of the UK’s teaching talent through careful observation and support of their practice. Allied to this, I have been a mentor on the UK Government’s “Gifted and Talented” initiative. This saw me nurture the intellectual curiosity and resilience of students whose SATs results indicated great academic promise, with my guidance resulting in learners in areas of high social deprivation attaining prestigious university places at Durham and King’s College, amongst others.
Moreover, due to this long history of being a highly sought-after teacher and mentor, my educational views have been sought out if I would like to appear on national media and radio to discuss government school policy, whilst also being head-hunted to tutor the children of prominent public figures including Premiership footballers, PGA Junior golfers, England cricketers, Olympic athletes, construction tycoons, and even the family of a Nobel Prize winner, all of which has been extremely humbling.
In terms of my extracurricular activities, I am an accomplished entrepreneur. In being born into the bottom 2% of UK’s most deprived households, I have been proud to become an accomplished property developer, with my own significant UK portfolio of residential holdings and stocks, as well as being co-founder of a former nationally operating property brand. This has saw me acting as a business mentor for disadvantaged students on entrepreneurship, and how to begin their own property investment journey, which has been a real joy in guiding some of the UK’s brightest new generation of business leaders.
In my remaining spare time, I am currently engaged in the pre-reading for the start of my future PHD in International Relations, during which I will be studying the Grand Strategy of the USA and China, as they negotiate the twenty first century during a period of superpower decline. Furthermore, I enjoy travelling with my young family in Tuscany and my wife’s homeland of Mauritius, supporting my beloved Manchester United (a very interesting experience!), hiking in our home of the Malvern Hills, and playing the drums (although, not as much as I used to, with two small children!)
As my full and varied career has hopefully shown, I have a passion for using my specialisms of English, Maths, History, Biology, International Relations and Entrance Exams, taking great pride in providing the best academic and pastoral support I can, whilst hopefully being an inspirational role model for my students, as I help them forge their way in the world.
III) MY QUALIFICATIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
🎓 PhD (start pending) at University of Warwick - My research will analyze the decline of the US superpower and its implications for international security architecture, focusing on its great power relationship with China during this structural change. This work will lead to several International Relations articles and culminate in my first full-length book on the subject.
📜 MRes (Dist) in International Security from University of Warwick - I won academic plaudits for writing an “outstanding and genuinely original dissertation” that represented “an important contribution to existing literature in the field of International Relations.”
🏅 PGCE in Secondary Education - Ranked amongst the top trainee teachers in my year’s cohort, with outstanding feedback in academic assignments and during my placement in an area of high social deprivation.
🎓 BA (Hons) in English/History from University of Birmingham - Received special recognition for achieving academic excellence despite coming from the bottom 2% of UK families in terms of economic poverty, of which I am immensely proud.

IV) MY EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
In terms of my teaching and tutoring experience, as stated, I have 20 years’+ experience turning around some of the UK’s toughest classrooms, as well as challenging high achieving learners in the pursuit of academic excellence. This has seen me teach/tutor across the curriculum Key Stage-ranges (7-18 years), extending all the way to postgraduate level students. Whilst I have much experience in teaching learners lacking confidence and those with Special Educational Needs, my rigorous yet friendly approach is also well-suited to developing the most able pupils.
As Head of Department, I raised English and Maths pass rates with a 25% upwards leap in my opening two years, with most students achieving at least one grade above their targets, with Ofsted noting the rapid improvement. As regards my tutoring practice, my pass grades in subjects of English, Maths, History and Biology have been consistently outstanding, so that the vast majority of my tutees pass with strong academic grades, attaining entry to prestigious institutions across the globe. Thus, during the last three academic years, my tutees enjoyed superb results in my specialist subjects, with 94% reaching their target minimum grade, and 74% exceeding this mark, entering fantastic institutions including Concord College, Oxbridge, The Sorbonne, Malvern College and the University of Heidelburg, as well as world-class employers like Rolls Royce and Microsoft.
Therefore, over my career as a leading global tutor so far, I am proud to have delivered over 37,000+ lessons across 5 continents and 42 countries, from the UK to Ukraine, and beyond.
As stated previously, I also have considerable mentoring expertise, in having built my own UK property portfolio currently valued at £3.1 million from sourcing, to renovation, to letting, I have mentored many adult and teenage entrants into property investing, guiding their purchases and renovations to the overall value of £16 million, and counting. VI) SOME OF MY PROUDEST STUDENT MOMENTS
In having tutored thousands of students globally over the past 20 years, it is always hard to choose my favourite student moments. Nevertheless, here are a few, which just help to illustrate my global reach, experience, and expertise.
🏏 (Helping a Brilliant Cricketer Make the Grade): When I started tutoring this learner, confidence was low and time was short. We had to increase the GCSE English Language and Maths grades to a 6 minimum, for entry to a prestigious boarding school regarded as the cradle of many of England’s top cricketers for the national team. The time pressure was intense, as we only had 3 months to jump 3 grades. Nevertheless, with a robust study plan put in place and constant emotional support (in between the daily net sessions!), it was a wonderful moment when they received their acceptance results, with the student going on to represent the national team. Great job :)
⛳ (England’s Golf Captain Heads to the States): I began tutoring this student locally, and we bonded immediately, with each lesson always bringing much laughter due to their brilliantly dry sense of humour. With golf tournaments taking place internationally, this required much flexibility and leveraging of online learning tools to bring the required results. I was so pleased they achieved their sports scholarship at a top US university, before hopefully joining the PGA Tour. I still remain in touch when I can, and am privileged to be charting their amazing progress in the sport.
📚 (Creating an Amazing Bermudan Scholar): What began as a quick essay editing session quickly developed into a full academic partnership lasting over 5 years, during which we achieved 96% and 97% in iGCSE English Language and Literature respectively, despite sitting the exams a year early. This vast improvement led to the school offering a £28,000 scholarship to study the International Baccalaureate, and entry into the school’s elite university preparation programme. Superb work, and extremely pleasing to see such inspiring progress.
🌍 (Tutoring Sudanese Refugees Trapped in a Warzone): In one of my toughest, but most rewarding tutoring assignments, I was sought out by a family of Sudanese refugees, who’d been caught up by a recent coup. With the US embargoing the country, this meant we didn’t have access to top US tech brands like Microsoft, etc., which definitely made things tricky! Nevertheless, we ensured minimal disruption to their education throughout a very difficult political period. Now they are happily preparing to enter a European university, which was a life-changing result for them.
VII) TUTORING APPROACH
Besides enjoying superb results, my pupils benefit from a relaxed yet challenging atmosphere, with high commitment being expected of them. This is demonstrated in both their personal and academic growth, which is among the most rewarding aspects of tutoring for me. I’m very friendly with a great sense of humor (so I’ve been told!), and I use this to make the learning as enjoyable as I can, while strengthening self-esteem and exciting the minds of my students. Through this, it is more than tutoring to me; I see our time together as equipping them with the vital skills they need to excel in later life.

I have been a qualified teacher since 2009 and taught in a variety of state and private schools in Kent, London, and Surrey. I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a 2:1 in Theology and Religious Studies and was awarded my MA in 2010.

I offer one, one and a half, and two-hour lessons, using questioning techniques to encourage deeper thinking and help students achieve top grades in English. I am currently Early Years Lead in a 2-form entry primary school having left my previous role of Head of EYFS & KS1 at Whitehill Community Academy, Halifax, where I had worked for 19 years. I also completed a one-term secondment as Interim Head Teacher at All Saints’ CE (VA) Primary School in the Autumn Term 2016.
I have completed my NPQH training and qualified in July 2015.
My personal visions and values strongly align with your vision statement, I am also passionate about ensuring that all children have full access to an inclusive education and range of experiences, regardless of their background. This means I am fully committed to delivering a curriculum and range of learning opportunities, both academic and pastoral, which will enrich and prepare all children for their life ahead. Current Leadership Experience
I have extensive experience in Early Years and Key Stage 1, although much of my role has also covered KS2. I also have experience through an interim role I completed as Deputy Head in an Independent School for pupils aged 7-15 years with severe Autism.
My main responsibilities include:
· Being the Senior Mentor for all ECT staff.
· Promoting effective relationships between staff, pupils and parents.
· Managing behavioural issues through the implementation of successful strategies such as the Restorative Justice system.
· Writing, developing and implementing our new creative, thematic curriculum (writing Programmes of Study which are cross-referenced to the National Curriculum and supporting Knowledge Organisers).
· Timetabling; Teaching & Learning monitoring (including introducing the new Deep-dive monitoring process); Staff and student placement and Induction.
· Being line manager for the lunchtime team.
· Writing policies for numerous subject and areas of school life.
In our most recent Ofsted Inspection (January 2020) our school was judged as ‘Good’, with many of the areas I am directly responsible for being highly praised. These included ‘Delivering a Broad, Balanced Curriculum’ and our Early Years Provision.
The areas which were highlighted for improvement were areas I had already identified and had started work on with the subject teams, but were not at full implementation stage at the time of inspection. This included our phonics and reading programme, which were not fully aligned at the time of inspection, but had already been identified during a deep dive in reading only a few weeks prior to the inspection. Following the inspection, I wrote a RAP for reading and Phonics, which had been actioned within just a few weeks.
I introduced a new tracking and assessment programme, DCPro in September 2018, which has helped to reduce workload both for the Tracking and Assessment Manager and for class teachers.
I have also had the opportunity to lead parent workshops on Mathematics and Assessment/ SATs preparation. I have been involved in the school’s Performance Management programme, using BlueSky.
I am the Senior Mentor for all Early Career Teachers and teacher-training students in the school, I ensure that the performance of ECT staff is monitored and reviewed through lesson observation with regular feedback given. I work in close partnership with Huddersfield University, Leeds Beckett, Trinity TSA and Teamworks.
I have also delivered ITT in Music to Huddersfield University students. I organise and often lead weekly assemblies for both Key Stages and regularly lead Achievement Assembly, which I always thoroughly enjoy. In the assembly organisation, I introduced ‘The Big Question’ linked to the assembly themes and to British Values and I ensure that all religious festivals and SMSC significant dates are covered in the assembly programme. In 2019, I also introduced Picture News to our assembly resources. During lockdown, I developed and recorded ‘Newsround’ assemblies, covering all aspects of World Religion, SMSC and current affairs. The assemblies have been so popular that I have continued recording them for use as a class-based assembly.
Previous Leadership Experience
In my role as Interim Head Teacher at All Saints in 2016 I met weekly with the Chair of Governors and I sat on all governing body committees, reviewing and writing policies and producing Head Teacher Reports. My responsibilities and achievements included:
· Ensuring that the school website was compliant and regularly up-dated. I led on staff training and staff meetings, carried out performance management appraisals for the staff team, scheduled lesson observations, work scrutinies and worked alongside the school business manager and the LA to develop the school budget.
· Successfully leading the school through its re-accreditation of the Basic Skills Quality Mark.
· Developing and leading on the school’s church ethos through Collective Worship and led on a highly successful Harvest Festival, Macmillan Coffee Morning and a series of events in church to celebrate Christmas, including Nativity performances, Carol Services and a musical concert.
· I am a firm believer in building and maintaining positive relationships with parents and the community and made it a priority to be a visible presence to parents by being on gate duty every morning and home-time to greet the children and parents.
· Working closely with the LA (including the Safeguarding team and the Health & Safety team), attending training and Calderdale Primary Head meetings, plus cluster meetings of the 12 schools within the Elland Cluster.
· I completed Whole-School Safeguarding Training and additional training for Designated Safeguarding Lead, which I have renewed for my role as Deputy DSL at Whitehill. I worked hard during my term as Head to develop an active role with the governing body and with the Senior Management Team and staff team, children and parents and also with the church. I worked hard to improve safeguarding and health and safety throughout the school.
Following my successful secondment at All Saints in January 2017, I returned to my post as Deputy Head Teacher at Whitehill. My role changed to Vice Principal in January 2018, following the retirement of our Executive Principal, changing again to Head of EYFS & KS1 in 2021. The school expanded in 2015 to give the potential for three-form entry throughout. We currently have 705 pupils on roll.
I played a key role in the expansion of the school, organising class register placements (to ensure an equal range of abilities and needs across each new class. I also played a key role, working closely with EYFS lead, in the planning and development of our new Early Years facilities, including designs of rooms, purchasing furniture, classroom resources and outdoor provision.
I was also involved in the recruitment of additional staff following the expansion, including short-listing and interviewing teachers and TAs / SEN Supports. I worked in close partnership with Wainstalls Primary School, which is part of I-Trust MAT, sharing many of my policies, schemes of work, curriculum documents and templates for Teaching & Learning / Deep-dive monitoring, many of which they have adapted to suit the needs of their individual school and adopted.
Continuing Professional Development
To ensure that my knowledge of curriculum and strategies are up to date, I have attended online National College training in the new EYFS Framework, the new Ofsted Framework, Deep-dives, Early Years practice, Baseline Assessments in Foundation Stage, Team Teach, Annual Safeguarding (plus DSL training), Safer Recruitment Training, PREVENT, White Rose Maths / Power Maths and The Write Stuff, plus RWI Phonics training and Epi-pen training.
Classroom Teaching Experience
I have substantial experience in primary education, having taught in every year group from Y1 through to Y6, plus cover in both Nursery and Reception. I have a high track record for results in the school at both key stages. In my role as subject leader, I have taken responsibility for Maths, Music and R.E. I play a key role in the school’s celebrations, included leading our Harvest Festivals alongside clergy from the local churches (Illingworth Methodist Church and St. John’s, Bradshaw) and holding our annual Christmas Carol service and Lessons, for almost 1000 children, teachers, parents and friends at Halifax Minster or Mount Zion Church. I have also musically directed and produced the Y6 end-of-year musicals, including ‘Joseph’ and ‘Oliver’, I also direct and accompany the school choir, who have participated in numerous concerts and for our elderly residents in the school’s catchment area as part of our Community Cohesion. As a very keen musician, I believe passionately that it should play a key part in school life. In 2019, I introduced The Rocksteady Music School to Whitehill and we currently have 10 rock bands involving children from Y1 to Y6.
As a classroom practitioner I always strived to set high standards in classroom organisation, discipline, planning and teaching. I continued with this same commitment to me leadership role. I work hard to ensure that everything runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible to gain results and hit deadlines. I have worked closely with the Pastoral team to ensure that the needs of vulnerable children are met, helping our school to achieve Investors in People Gold Award and Inclusion Quality Mark. In 2007 I had the opportunity to visit one of our Comenius Link schools in Denmark to look at how the school systems work, and I also visited the Kandy schools group in Sri Lanka in 2011.
Out-of-School
In an out-of-school context, I also bring sixteen years of leadership experience through my past work for Calderdale Youth Service. I am a strong believer in work-life balance and have a number of interests. I am also a member of my local Amateur Operatic Society, along with being a regular Musical Director / pianist for a 12-piece singing group called ‘Encore’. I have also been Musical Director for local amateur pantomimes and was also MD for a 100th Anniversary production of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ in 2018. I am also pianist for Bradford Accordion Band. In 1998, I also qualified with the IDTA as a dance teacher in Ballroom, Latin and Modern. I was also church organist for eleven years in a small village church in Bradford and have recently played for services at my local village church (including playing for our late Queen’s memorial service, the pop-up Nativity service and the St Valentine’s family service). All of my ‘hobbies’ are very flexible to allow full commitment to my work in school.
For nearly 10 years, I have been working both as a private tutor and a schoolteacher, teaching predominantly Spanish and English to students of all ages and abilities in person and online. Following a lifelong love of languages, I studied Spanish and English Literature at GCSE, achieving A* and A respectively, and at A-level, achieving B and A* respectively. In 2015, I advanced my studies at the University of Reading, where, in 2019, I obtained my BA in Spanish and English Literature. In my year abroad, I studied in Mexico (University of the Americas Puebla) and Cuba (University of Havana). Since graduating, I’ve taught thousands of hours of Spanish and English online to hundreds of students, reaching the top of the Spanish tutor ranks on another platform and receiving dozens of positive, predominantly five-star reviews from satisfied clients across the continent. Knowing from personal experience how challenging learning a foreign language or mastering the art of essay writing can be, I aim to facilitate the process for my students by personalising my lessons to their individual needs. Personable, passionate and productive, my mission is to help my students not only achieve but exceed their goals.

I have been a secondary school teacher for 25 years and prior to this have taught in Surrey and North London. I also have experience of examining for the major examination boards at both GCSE and A Level.
Currently working as a full time English teacher at a private school. My job isn't limited to teaching. My biggest priority, more than anything, is inspiring my students to realise their own potential.
