I am a highly experienced teacher, performer, composer and arranger, living and working in beautiful East Devon. I love and play music of all kinds. Clarinet, Saxophone and Flute are my favourites, as nothing feels closer to the human voice.
After a first class BA in music and a PGCE that specialised in instrumental teaching, I have taught continuously in Devon schools and privately at home for over thirty years.
I offer relaxed lessons to all ages, primary to adult. I believe in an individual approach, following your interests, providing materials to suit, and sharing your love of music. As a performer, I have experience of classical, jazz, folk, pop, soul and rock, and I teach improvisation and ear skills alongside reading. I am fully familiar with the music curriculum and often support it in my lessons. I also offer a full external exam service where appropriate, using the Trinity College syllabus.

I'm a passionate and dedicated pianist with over 8 years of experience in both Jazz and Classical styles. Music has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember, and my journey has led me to achieve ABRSM Grade 8 in Piano and Grade 5 in Music Theory. I’m currently expanding my knowledge and skills by studying Jazz at the prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with leading musicians and educators.
My teaching approach is grounded in a strong foundation of advanced music theory, including harmony, counterpoint, and musical analysis. I also have extensive experience in both classical and jazz composition, allowing me to support students who are not only interested in performance but also in creating their own music. I strive to make every lesson engaging, supportive, and tailored to each student’s individual goals—whether you're a complete beginner just starting your musical journey or an advanced player looking to deepen your technique, style, or improvisation skills.
Above all, I aim to make learning the piano a joyful and enriching experience, helping students build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love for music.

Margarita is an academic composer known for her chamber and symphonic music. She is a laureate in composer competitions. Additionally, she has composed music for theatre performances and audiobooks. Margarita has also performed as a pianist in concert venues in Moscow and other Russian cities as a soloist and in ensembles.

Hi - I'm Nic S. and I've dedicated most of my life to music. If you're passionate about music, I'd really love to help you improve your skills, and develop your creativity. My first instrument (Which I've studied to degree level) is guitar, and I consider this instrument my 'Home base'. Music is more than just 'playing guitar' though, so I'm also open to teaching music theory, composition, songwriting, production, engineering as well as mixing and mastering. I don't work to a curriculum, and I don't teach grades (Unless it's what a student wants). Whatever you're struggling with is what we'll focus on, and the music that excites you is the music we'll be learning about! I'm here to teach you, for you. As a teacher I work closely with pupils to develop personal goals, and work together on a simple plan on how to reach them. I believe understanding the reason the student is taking lessons and playing guitar/bass or embarking on other musical developments is fundamental to providing quality tuition, so I strive to create plans with the pupil to support their aims. Each lesson always keeps the pupil’s individual goals at its centre, and is created to develop musical fluency.
Ultimately I teach the student to teach themselves by understanding core musical concepts and developing a base of fundamental skills, these include; Ear Training - learning how to recognise the chords in any given song by ear; Strumming and Picking/Fingerpicking Technique - fluency with all standard right hand techniques is a must, and I teach these prioritising what is commonly used in their favourite styles; Reading TAB as well as Staff notation.
Creative Playing, Song Writing, and Improvising is my favourite area of playing and teaching as it helps learners find their own voice! I help to build knowledge of music theory in a practical and applicable way, exploring new concepts that will enable students to discover new sounds.
Again, this is catered to their aims - if they wish to write songs we'll look at some of their favourite artists/genres, see what they're doing, and set some aims for targets to write using some of their techniques.
If learners want to improvise, we'll explore some of our favourite improvisers - what scales to they use, how do they shape their phrases, and what articulation techniques are employed.
If learners have experience playing but need to improve techniques I can show drills and exercises that will make them a better player.
We explore a lot of aspects - from how to move economically; where to have tension and where to avoid it; tonal possibilities as well as how to structure your practice so you get the most for your time, whether you have a little or a lot.
