Why study Geography?

Studying Study GeographyGeography can provide an individual with an understanding of our planet and its systems. Those who study geography are better prepared to understand topics impacting our planet such as climate change, global warming, desertification and water resource issues, among others. You only have to read the papers daily to see an extreme weather story and how it impacts people's geographical situation. Then there's the understanding of political geography. Those who study geography are able to comprehend and explain global political issues arising between countries, cultures and cities, as well as regions within countries.

Geography is so important that it's known as “the mother of all sciences”. It was one of the first of all the fields of study and academic disciplines developed, as humans sought to find out what the planet was made of and what was to be seen in unknown territories. Through exploration, geographers studied the landscapes, the landforms and the terrain of our planet, while cultural geographers studied cities, transportation networks and our cultures and ways of life.

Many geographers devote their studies and careers to learning and understanding a specific region or country, including its culture, foods, language, religion, landscape and all aspects of the region, in order to become an expert. This type of geographer is desperately needed today for a better understanding of our world and its regions. They are needed by politicians, pressure groups concerned about the environment and, yes, mining companies. Those who are experts in certain regions of the world are certain to find career opportunities.

The world as a whole needs responsible citizens and experts to care for it. In addition to knowing about our planet and its people, those who choose to study geography will learn to think critically, research and communicate their thoughts through writing and other channels independently. They'll thus have skills that are valued in all careers.

Geography is a well-rounded discipline that provides students not only with ample career opportunities, but also with knowledge about our rapidly changing world and how humans are impacting our planet. Studying geography will enable you to appreciate Earth as the homeland of humankind and provide insight for wise management decisions about how the planet’s resources should be used. It will also enable you to understand interdependence, thus becoming a better, more empathetic global citizen.
