As a child, I struggled in school. My reading age was low, and my Maths skills were poor. I was the youngest in my year, and I struggled to relate to my teachers; I was quiet, isolated and did not like school. Fast-forward a decade, and I achieved 5 A’s and 4 A*s at GCSE. Two years later; and it was AAAA* in English Literature, History, Photography and an Extended Project at A-level. Today, I am a postgraduate student at a Russell group University, averaging a first-class mark, having completed erasmus study in Poland, and attained a first-class law degree at undergraduate level. I believe that academic success is within the reach of us all. Natural ability is a myth, and instead success is made up of determination and hard-work, consistent practice, a supportive learning environment, and confidence. A tutor who relates to their students and acts as a resource for them to reach their highest potential is a vital ingredient in this recipe for success. I did not achieve academic success because I am very gifted, or even intelligent. I achieved these things because of a combination of simple tactics. These involved targeted practice with a supportive professional. Fast-forward to today - and the student has become the tutor! This philosophy has led me to tutoring, which has quickly turned into a passion and a long-term commitment. In just three months I have amassed over 6 long-term clients, and completed over 250 hours of lesson time with these students and have no plans to slow my practice! I tutor across the board. One of my students is a 47-year old EFL Business English learner, one is a 6-year old 11+ student. In-between, we have A-level Drama tutoring, GCSE English Literature and Language work, and a student learning essay-skills at degree level. My approach is simple: I use formulas (acronyms) for each topic to ensure student success, I exercise patience when explaining and use multi-media means (depending on how they learn best + their learning needs) to explain. I also promote a relaxed atmosphere during my sessions (I build rapport with my students to gain trust). My tutoring method is strategic, using past papers and government approved curriculum-resources as the basis of my lessons to ensure the hard-work the student is doing is reflected in their success at school. It is also highly individualized. I make a dedicated schedule for each student upon their joining my client-base; it's personalized and carefully made based on their learning needs, style, gaps in knowledge and geared towards their interest. I recently completed a football-themed essay test with a student as he loved Arsenal - and the results were fantastic. I make the effort - meeting students where they're at, because far from being a natural ‘gift’, academic success is a muscle which must be regularly flexed, and is strengthened with consistent practice. I enjoy my job so much that I plan to turn this into my career. I have completed a teaching qualification, and am completing my Master's Degree in Law before hopefully moving onto virtual tutoring full-time from October onwards. I feel so lucky to have found a career in which my instinctive patience, determination and empathy can flourish and really make long-term positive changes to students academic performance, their confidence in school, and help them enjoy learning. Getting to do this is a privilege, and a responsibility I take seriously. In particular, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I know many parents feel lost and many students are behind and find school very stressful. My calming, 1:1 sessions offer an opportunity to learn at their own pace, write about what they are interested in, and catch-up during Summer before the new academic year commences. Moreover, I offer a heavily discounted 30-minute introductory session costing just £5. During this session, I meet with the student (and parent, if they like) and we get to know one another. I ask questions to learn more about the student as an individual, and we discuss some of the expectations of us working together. I ask them about things such as their goals from working with me, their long-term career plans, hobbies, whether they like school, how they learn best, whether they have any learning needs such as dyslexia, etc. Afterwards, I craft a tailored schedule for the student depending on how many hours a week they may need to achieve their goal/catch-up, etc. I find an average of 2 hours per week most beneficial to long-term memorization and learning. We then begin conducting sessions - the fun part! These are 1 hour long, and my students often marvel at how fast the hour-long slot goes, so 4 of them have currently switched to 1 hr 30 to get some more practice in! Every child deserves an opportunity to reach their maximum potential. In addition to focusing on a child`s academic progress, I always look for opportunities to boost their confidence and self-esteem - as these are crucial for a holistic development. Difficult concepts are broken down in smaller ones through scaffolding using different techniques differentiated according to each child`s individual need. It is important to push each child past their comfort zone, and I do exactly that with the students I tutor by challenging them in different ways. I tutor children across the primary phase, all the way from teaching how to read and write in English, to solving complex problems in Maths, to preparing them for their upcoming SATs or 11+ exams.
I tailor my lessons to cater for each child's individual needs. I have a gentle and friendly approach towards children and I always look for ways to help them make connections between the things they learn and for them to develop a love for learning. I am Holly, a tutor in Psychology, Neuroscience, statistics and essay writing. My teaching style can vary based on the student but generally a fun, relaxed and proactive approach is what I find works best. I run sessions weekly or biweekly for an hour and am available at any time to answer student’s simpler questions. Depending on the student, there maybe work for the students for so in between sessions. I believe that learning is most nurtured in a honest and judgement free area. Everyone works in different ways and I strive to tailor my teaching to the individual. I used to struggle in my studies, finding myself stuck on how to write academically, concisely and using appropriate structure. I found external help with my studies that gave me invaluable support that I wish to pass on the other students. I have an undergraduate in Psychology and a masters in Neuroscience. I have studied Psychology for six years and chose to specialise in the wonders of Neuroscience! I also specialise in quantitative research methods and statistics. I believe that neuroscience is an amazing subject and hope to continue studies onto a PhD! I have experience sitting exams and essay writing/course work and can help with either. These different assessments styles can be tricky to juggle, but with the right framework it can be done! At A-Level I teach according to the AQA exam board for Psychology and statistics. In further education, I teach Psychology and Neuroscience at the undergraduate level and statistics at a masters level. I don’t have much formal teaching experience but I have taught others for a few years now. I do have experience teaching a few others on academic writing and psychology to aid their assessments. For a specific example, I helped a student in International Relations achieve 90/100 after supporting them with shortfalls in academic writing. I helped the student to re-write and edit their assessments and assessment drafts to be more concise, clear and academic. The student was able to change their current essay and future essays to achieve consistently higher marks. I have also supported student through the trials of statistics, helping them to understand which test to use and when.

I have been teaching for over 24 years. My experience is in tutoring and teaching English/Maths/IELTS/Esol in schools and colleges. I have been teaching on line for 5 years. I have a BA in Education, Celta, Cert-Ed teaching qualification.
Teaching is my third and final career and I love it. I have over 25 years experience of helping students of all ages and abilities achieve their goals. I am a qualified teacher with 14 years in classrooms, teaching English and law, and I'm also a qualified journalist and solicitor. I found school very challenging myself, so I completely understand why many very bright students don't do as well as they could at school. The truth is, school isn't always the best place to learn. The current situation means that by September, most of the current cohort of students in year 10 are not going to know what has hit them. GCSE has become increasingly difficult since 2008 and the 2015 reform means that it is exceedingly difficult to get above grade 6. I anticipate that this year's year 11 cohort hoping to study English at A level will be similarly shellshocked. The gap between GCSE and A level is enormous and even students with a predicted grade 8 or 9 are likely to find the A level daunting to say the least. I offer one to one support online using facetime, zoom and Google docs for students able to type.
I also offer small group preparation for both next year's GCSE and A levels in both language and literature to ensure that in September they hit the ground running. These sessions are done using zoom or at my home in Ealing. Tutoring Experience:- Since 1998 I have helped literally hundreds of students to:-
* achieve grade A/A*/9 in GCSE English both literature and language;
* get into a wide range of top London schools both private and selective grammar schools including St Paul's Girls, St Paul's Boys, Henrietta Barnett, Tiffin Girls, Eton, UCS, as well as Merchant Taylor, Godolphin and Latimer, Haileybury, Hampton, John Lyons, Notting Hill and Ealing, Kew House, St James', Kings College Wimbledon, Haberdashers Askes, St Helen's Northwood, Northwood College, Royal Masonic, Habs Girls, Harrow School, Northbridge House, St Augustines, Brighton College and Latymer Upper * win scholarships to Harrow School, UCS Northwood College and Notting Hill and Ealing High. I also help children aged 4 and above who are struggling with English, French or maths. In 2019 I had five GCSE students who attend state private schools, and three who attend private schools including St. Pauls Boys; six 11+ primary students and four home-schooled students aged 7, 12, 14 and 16.
I am pleased to say that out of the 8 GCSE students, 7 got grade 9 for both English language and English literature. The other student got 9 for literstliterature for language As for my 11+ students, in February this year all 6 of them got places at their first choice schools which were NHE, Latymer Upper, Kew House, Tiffin Girls, Henrietta Barnett and Northwood College. I also see several adults on a regular or ad hoc basis, for example Claudette who is 58. Initially I helped her with GCSE English in 2016. I then supported her during her Access course. She's now halfway through her degree in physiotherapy at Birkbeck.
Background information:- My first teaching experience was as a volunteer, teaching Adult Literacy from 1985-1987 while working as a freelance journalist.
When I completed my LPC in 1994 I started tutoring law while waiting for a training contract to manifest. Halfway through that training contract I realised that I preferred working as a tutor to working in law and left law.
From 1995-97 I taught at a local boys preparatory school - Durston House - while completing my vocational training part time as a solicitor. I began tutoring fulltime in 1998 when I realised that although working in the law is fascinating, it's not a lifestyle I want, and I have been tutoring ever since. From 1999 to 2012 I was teaching English fulltime in a sixth form college which specialised in English at all levels from Functional Skills and IELTS, to academic English i.e. GCSE, Access, and A Level language, literature and lang/lit. I continued to see a few private students, and in 2012 I returned to fulltime tutoring. Ad hoc help:- Apart from tutoring, I also help adult students with their theses and dissertations, teach them how to edit their work properly, how to ensure that they are not straying off topic, and how to improve their vocabulary and expression. I can do this online or face to face. Help with personal statements, applications for research grants and CVs is available face to face or via Google docs. Children- and adults- with disabilities:- In the last 22 years I have taught literally thousands of students and many of them have had disabilities including deaf students, visually impaired students and students with cerebral palsy, as well as students with learning difficulties including AS, APD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and ADD/ADHD. I have studied the growing problem of both ESOL and native speaking English students who have difficulty in drawing inferences from what they read. My method of teaching uses a very carefully selected range of texts to focus on intensely in order to determine whether further investigation is appropriate. I am not qualified to diagnose autism but I have successfully taught many students on the spectrum. Tutoring Approach:- Alongside teaching, I have studied the psychology of learning and have many tools at my disposal to teach the skills that today's students and job seekers need. If you are struggling in school, college or university, it is not your fault. My job is to ensure that you do not need a tutor as quickly as possible while offering ongoing support if necessary. I believe that given the right atmosphere, attitude and support, anyone can succeed. A stressful environment makes learning almost impossible, so my lessons are extremely relaxing. Students are usually amazed at how fast the time passes. At the end of the session I ensure the student understands everything covered in that session, and may ask for the student to complete an appropriate length homework to bring to the next session. My motto is "self talk determines destiny" and I help students to unlearn the idea that they can't do something. My approach is first to ensure that I am the right tutor for the student. The first session is designed for the student (and their parents) to assess me, as well as for me to work out the student's current level of ability and their learning style. In subsequent sessions the most important thing is to ensure that the student has no gaps in their understanding of the subject and what is required. So I always begin at the beginning and usually students progress very quickly through the first phase. Once they are reasonably confident and have caught up with their school's expectations, I begin to stretch them, at their own pace. I believe that students want to do well but are self-conscious and dislike asking for help at school as it makes them feel stupid. Lack of basic understanding results in lack of self confidence which can easily develop into becoming withdrawn or disruptive in class, or hating the subject. It is quite easy to turn the student's attitude around once they realise that they can succeed, so I do a lot of confidence building exercises and use praise and humour to help them see what they are doing wrong and what they are doing right. As a result of this, their self esteem is enhanced and they become more willing to contribute in class and take risks, rather than sitting in the back of the classroom praying for the time to pass. I use my own resources which I have developed by studying assessment criteria and objectives of all of the boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC) as well as the specifics of GCSE and IGCSE. For 11+ and CE I use a wide range of texts that are demanding and lend themselves to students learning how to explore linguisruc effects. I prefer to tutor at the student's home because I think students feel more secure and relaxed in their own home, however students can of course, come to me if this suits them better. Parents are welcome to sit in on sessions as long as the student feels comfortable with that. I am always happy to consider teaching friends at the same time to keep costs down (max group size 4 students), and am happy to negotiate an appropriate rate for group sessions. Such sessions take place in my home. Please note the following:- 1. I charge a supplement of £7.50 to travel upto 3 miles as well as a residents parking ticket if necessary or reimbursement for parking costs;
2. I require a minimum of 48 hours notice of cancellation or payment in full (except for travel time) under all circumstances including sudden illness.Whenever possible I will offer a session later in the week but this is not always possible.
3. On Sundays I only teach from my home;
4. For distances beyond 3 miles radius of my home, the minimum session is an hour and a half. This can be shared between siblings, or between subjects eg maths and English, maths and French or English and French;
5. For distances beyond 5 miles radius of my home, I charge for one hour of my time, or an uber in both directions, whichever is cheaper, instead of £7.50. These sessions are also a minimum of an hour and a half, which can be shared between siblings or subjects;
6. All GCSE and A level students are welcome to send me essays of upto 1000 words to comment on between sessions. There is no charge.for this service. Finally, if you would like references from current or previous students (or their parents) please just ask.
