I currently teach part time at a secondary school in West Norfolk to ensure I keep my mathematcis skills up to date and understand the latest exam requirements and teaching methods. Along side of this I tutor pupils both at their home address and also using online sessions as required.

Hello there,
Raising the academic attainment of students has been a deep passion and successful achievement - as a founding former headteacher of a school for 4- 16-year-olds (ten years), a teacher, and a tutor. I have recent English teaching experience at a school (and remotely), in addition to marking GCSE English Language and literature papers. Therefore I am at ease in teaching both key stages three and four students. I spent six happy years at the ArtsEd Drama School in Chiswick, where, rather serendipitously, I assumed the reins of responsibility from MY drama teacher! Born and bred in Paris, France, I came to the UK 25+ years ago to work as an animator and graphic designer. I am hence fluent in English and, beside art, I have always been interested in foreign languages: English, Spanish, German... In fact, languages were among my choices of career when I was at school. I started my career in animation with an internship in a studio in Barcelona, where I could also polish my skills in Spanish. Being particularly enamoured with English, I did all I could to learn it from an early age: reading books, listening to songs, watching films in English... Coming to the UK to live and work was a dream come true.
I worked as an animator in the videogame industry first, then for TV and film. I am also an author and illustrator, with a comic book (involving cartoon animals and motorbikes, among other things...) and a bilingual (French-English) children's book published so far. I also got into designing graphics for t-shirts and the gift industry.
Working on my bilingual children's book, which I wrote, translated from French to English and illustrated, not only made me realise the same story will never be articulated in the same way from one language to another but, led me to think about teaching my own language to others.
So here I am: while I don't hide the enthusiasm and sheer joy I feel in the process of transmitting my knowledge to my tutees, I am also a friendly, patient tutor with a calm and gentle demeanour, always making sure that the words, phrases, and grammar are understood correctly.
I teach children, teenagers, adults, seniors... and will adapt my teaching style to each person's ability, goals and interests. I can teach in person and online on Skype, Zoom, Messenger or anything else that I may not be aware of but that you use yourself.

At First Class Learning we provide tailored support based on individual student needs which is delivered on a one-to-one basis within one of our virtual learning centres.
Our programmes, with links to the National Curriculum, often result in improvements across the board and not just in the subject studied. Help is always available for external exams and assessments such as SATs and GCSEs. We will tailor your child's programme around their individual needs and linked to the exam specification they are studying. Students can also bring homework in to the centre from school related to the subject(s) they are studying with us.
Students are welcomed at the centre at any time between the 2 hours stated and the time spent in the centre is flexible. A member of staff will be allocated to sit down with your child on a one-to-one basis to go through the topic scheduled each session and will also encourage your child to do some work independently after they have completed some tasks together.
New learning is introduced alongside what is already familiar, so that students feel safe and can see the progress they have made. Progress is in small achievable steps so that children constantly experience success. Through studying with FCL students develop self-learning skills. This is where they have the right skills set and confidence in themselves to approach something new and attempt it without assistance. Just as importantly, they see an error as a learning opportunity and not a sign of failure.
The service that we offer is very similar to that of home tutoring except, of course, students come to us as opposed to being within their home and because of this we are able to keep the fees lower.
The monthly tuition fee includes attendance at the centre every week and a programme of daily homework (if you would like it) for your child to practise skills between sessions. The homework we provide is a continuation of the work your child completes with us within the Centre. That said, we have many students who don't take homework. It is flexible and we can discuss what's best based on your child's circumstances.
The structured programme we provide produces learning patterns in the brain which ensures skills and facts become lodged in the long-term memory. Your child will develop increased speed, accuracy, concentration and particularly confidence.

My background and journey
Before working for myself I ran a youth work charity in Cumbria for 10 years, and also worked to empower young people to become active with volunteering in their local community. I taught Psychology at GCSE, A-level, Degree and Post Graduate levels. I have also worked within the homeless sector and within the adult education system coordinating learning support in the same role a SENDCO would have in a school.
My areas of expertise are in dyslexia, trauma and mental health, confidence building, motivation and one to one work. My ability to think outside the box when engaging people means that I capture peoples imagination and show them how they can motivate themselves to be successful. My experience in the Army has also honed my self determination and efficiency.
I am dyslexic, although I wasn’t assessed until I was an adult, I always suspected that I viewed the world in a slightly different way to others. I suspect I have elements of other SpLD's too which means that I have to put more effort into everyday life than most people. This means that I can truly empathise with the people I work with.
My adventure with dyslexia has taught me to understand that what I have to offer is unique and valuable because of my dyslexia, not despite my dyslexia! This is what I want to teach to our everyone in our community who is also neurodiverse.
I am also a mum to a very lively and humorous 10 yr boy. As a parent I understand the issues that parents have in trying to get their child's needs met, this coupled with my experience teaching and coordinating learning support which underpins my training as a dyslexia specialist and trauma and mental health practitioner means that I understand how parents and schools can work together to get the best for every child.

In the mornings I worked with whole classes and in the afternoon I ran group or 1-1 sessions with children that needed extra support, such as children with special educational needs. Additionally, I ran an Astronomy club for year 2 and year 5. I planned, taught, and assessed each child in my class and shared my passion and enthusiasm for the subject with them.I have since completed a PGCE in primary education at the Institute of Education at University College London (UCL). During my placement, I worked primarily with a year 5 class, planning, teaching, and assessing up to 80% of the timetable. On this placement, I taught consecutive lessons in year 1 and 2 also, mostly focusing on Phonics and Maths.My specialism is Computing and I ran a Computing project with my year 5 class on this placement, collecting and subsequently presenting my findings to my colleagues at UCL. This project investigated the ways in which Computing can be used to promote cross-curricular learning and was thoroughly enjoyable, successful, and interesting.I was also lucky enough to gain valuable experience on placement at Brooklyn New School in New York, where I taught year 2. My main focus at this school was Literacy and Numeracy, as well as Philosophy for Children (which is now on the National Curriculum) and I have a broad and well-rounded knowledge of a variety of teaching strategies and methods.Additionally, I run a YouTube channel providing lessons in Astronomy for children and adult beginners. I plan and prepare the lessons most relevant and accessible to children, where it can link to the national curriculum.

My Approach To Teaching A-Level Biology
I use lots of different teaching strategies. The strategies used are specific to each students learning needs. One of the most important strategies I use is to explain complicated biological concepts simply and clearly. Here are some more specific strategies that I use.
1. Socratic Questioning
Written or verbal questions cannot be overstated. They are a powerful way to find out if a student understands the concepts. questioning also gives the opportunity to allow the students to think about the concepts, recall facts and make links between concepts. Simple questions that start with: how, why and what are very effective.
2. Feedback
Without feedback, students will never make progress. Feedback has the highest impact factor of 8 in helping students learn. I give detailed feedback on students work so they can improve.
3. Exam Technique
Without being taught how to answer a question, most students will not achieve good grades in their exams. This is a skill that I take very seriously in preparing my students for. I teach Comprehension skills, Word analysis, the meaning of assessment objectives and how they relate to the difficulty of the questions, the meaning of different command words so students can understand what a question is asking them to do. I have decades worth of past exam papers and I make these available to all my students. I work through many past questions to make sure students have excellent exam techniques.
4. Making Links
The highest grades will only be achieved if students can apply their understanding to different situations. Through questioning and tailored activities, I prepare students to master this vital skill.
5. Retrieval Practise
We learn by making links to knowledge we already have. Retrieval practice forces students to actively recall information from their memory. When this is done the memory is strengthened and information is forgotten less. This is a very important thing for students to do. I produce tailed activities and puzzles to help students with this strategy.
6. Maths & Prac
Maths make up 10% of the marks in a question paper and 15% of the marks are practical based questions. It is so important that students have good abilities in these areas. I always ensure students can achieve in these areas.

A Costs Lawyer and PGCE Tutor with 20 years experience in all aspects of academia who teaches Law, Politics and English in Cardiff at GCSE, AS AS Undergraduate, Post Graduate level and English ESL to Chinese children online.
After graduating I secured a position with Eversheds for 8 years as a Costs Lawyer and bespoke tutor. The emphasis was on managing a team with responsibility for recovery of costs on behalf of large external clients, predominantly insurers and government departments as well as financial organisations.
From November 2007, I embarked upon my own private practice with a dual purpose of providing legal advice to clients along side structures and bespoke tutoring. This was followed by a decision to work on a consultancy basis, continuing as a costs lawyer focusing on claimant work and concentrating on my tutoring skills, enabling flexibility to work around family commitments.
