Thanks for visiting my profile - I'm Jon Rattenbury and I play and teach guitar and other fretted instruments. I've been involved with music professionally for 25 years.

I have taught guitar in Sussex for 25 years, both privately and in schools, colleges and university. I help students with auditions, performances, music exams and just getting better at playing. Whether you want to learn classical guitar, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar or ukulele, I have the knowledge and experience to ensure you can progress quickly.
I provide tuition for music theory and often contribute practical help and guidance for composing and song-writing. I even have experience on lute and baroque guitar, if you have an interest in early music. For those interested in singing while playing guitar or ukulele, I can share my own singing and accompanying experience and help you find your voice.
My wide experience teaching children and teenagers ensures that students will enjoy learning their instrument while making real progress. Past and present students have worked on music A-level, GCSE and IB performances, undergraduate university degree coursework, practiced for concerts and gigs, prepared for auditions and for music grade exams.
I also teach adults, from complete beginners to university students, to other guitar teachers who want to widen their knowledge. Also for adult classical guitarists, I run a regular guitar group. This is great for sight-reading, learning new repertoire and musicianship. It's also good fun and it's a friendly and relaxed group.
I have worked as a music examiner for RSL (Rockschool) and IBO, and helped RSL & ABRSM with music syllabus development, so I have a very good understanding of music qualifications.
I have enhanced DBS certification for working with children and vulnerable adults, and Public Liability Insurance.

I am a professional violinist, violist and conductor, studying for a PhD in Music at the University of Cambridge. As a Supervisor in the Faculty of Music, I teach undergraduate music students at Cambridge. I also teach conducting, violin, viola, and chamber music at the Saffron Walden Centre for Young Musicians in Essex. With over nine years of tutoring experience, I also offer private tuition in violin, viola, orchestral conducting, music, music theory, philosophy, history, essay and dissertation skills, english literature, classical civilisation and violin performance.
From the age of 17, I have taught violin and viola to a variety of students, ranging from children and adults beginning their studies, to more advanced performers looking to improve their technical facility and performance skills.
Alongside my MPhil studies at Cambridge, in which I specialised in the cultural history and musical aesthetics of Germany and France in the Long Nineteenth Century, I began working as a freelance academic tutor, and taught Music, History, Philosophy, English Literature, Dissertation Skills, and Classics to A-Level Students. I have since developed two years’ experience, in which I have taught over 900+ hours of educational content with a diversity of tutoring organisations and online education platforms. I also have experience teaching in a classroom setting. I worked as an Assistant Music Teacher at a Sixth Form College, which involved teaching Music A-Level students. I have also worked with academic summer schools in Oxford to prepare Oxbridge hopefuls for their entrance examinations.

Approach to Teaching
– I favour a structured approach to teaching. I devise lesson plans in advance of every lesson, catered to the student's specific needs. I also inform the design of my classes through a constructive dialogue with my students. This enables me to structure my lessons within a curriculum that meets my students' specific educational needs, and serves to enable my students to achieve tangible improvements in their academic performance and musical ability.
Academic Tuition
– My academic lessons tend to be structured around specific sections of the syllabus, or particular topics that students require help with.
– I employ a seminar style format, in which I flesh out ideas with the aid of quotations, other audio-visual resources, and analytical commentary which my students can use to develop essays, essay plans, revision tools, and exam revision packs.
– I use Powerpoint to provide students with a variety of resources and visual stimuli.
– I structure my lesson plans with a view to providing short points of rest or temporary closure, in which students are able to ask questions about the content. I am also happy for students to interrupt the flow of the lesson if a burning question arises.
Musical Performance
– Violin lessons tend to be carefully planned to focus on specific technical aspects of performance. To train musicality, I often teach this through the use of Kreutzer and Fiorillo etudes, Dont studies, and also pieces of repertoire catered to the student's musical interests and technical requirements.
– I am open to considering student repertoire suggestions if they are particularly passionate about a certain piece.
Lesson Structure
– Academic lessons tend to be 45–60 minutes in length, but I can adapt my teaching schedule to provide students with additional support if needed.
– Typically violin lessons range in length from 30 minutes to an hour, but I am flexible: I am more than happy to devise a lesson structure that caters for a student's requirements.

Joe began his musical journey at the age of six. Initially following the classical tradition, he completed his Grade 8 qualification before applying for higher education. Joe studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama between 2014 and 2016, under Mei Yi Foo. This period saw development in his command of the instrument and skills in accompaniment, solo, and chamber performance.
Forever drawn to a range of genres, an interest in jazz music naturally emerged. Joe joined the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire jazz programme in 2018, where he studied 1:1 with John Turville and Liam Noble. He also received band coaching from tutors such as John O’Gallagher and Percy Pursglove. These experiences helped to shape his approach to harmony, improvisation, and group playing. Joe continues to study and explore jazz theory in his own time.
In addition to his musical commitments, Joe runs Installed Events: a small business that supplies entertainment and AV hire for weddings, parties, and corporate events. I teach to all ages, up to Grade 8 on the Drums, Grade 4 on the Guitar and on the Piano I will teach to a high standard, but not through the grading system as I only teach basic level sight reading for Piano.
I have taught many students over the years at varying ages and skill levels, and all have come out more passionate and more improved at there instrument.
My students have all mentioned how they find there lessons thoroughly productive and enjoyable, finding themselves increasingly motivated to play after having lessons with me. (see references at the bottom)
In my lessons I will take the students up through the Grades (ONLY for Drums and Guitar), via Rockschool, teaching them everything they need from technique, learning how to sight read, developing improvisation skills, playing in many different genres of music, and how to play by ear. I will also cover how to complement the music you are playing to and how to serve the music. As well as developing musicianship skills and how to have the right attitude in the music business.
- on the Piano I will teach to a high standard, going through everything listed above, as well as scales, arpeggios, inversions, learning classical and contemporary pieces, and basic level sight reading, but NOT grades unfortunately.

Hello! I'm Irene Palencia. I'm a graduated Classical Pianist and Spanish Philologist, now studying a Master in University of York. I have taught private individuals for over 20 years. Exam grades instrument tuition and also rock and pop music.
Offering lessons in person or online, I have been performing professionally for 38 years and teaching for 26 years. I was initially taught piano by my grandfather, the renowned concert pianist and head of piano at RSAMD, Jack Wight www.*** I then completed my studies under Ms Anna Rastopchina. I currently play in an 8-piece function band as well as a jazz ensemble. I am also the musical director for shows held in the Clyde Auditorium and the Dumbarton theatre every spring. I teach piano & keyboard to all ages and stages. Roughly half my students study for the ABRSM piano grades, and so far my pupils (over 200 candidates) have a 100% pass rate. My other students play for enjoyment, learning various styles and technique. I also prepare students for the school curriculum Nat 4/5, Higher Music and Advanced Higher Music. I teach classical piano, jazz, pop, blues, music theory and composition. I tailor all lessons to the individual needs and aspirations of the student, employing various teaching styles. I also teach some pupils to play by ear, as well as improvisational skills, if requested. I prefer to teach from my own house, where I have a beautiful Yamaha U3 piano, as well as a Nord digital 88 piano, Roland Juno DS keybpoard/synthesizer, vintage Hammond organ and Leslie speaker and recording equipment.
