Letter of Application
I am an energetic and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about helping children to flourish, aspire and attain their potential. I ensure this by creating a positive and stimulating environment and wherever possible, challenging children and creating opportunities to aim higher. I was inspired to apply for your Y1 post because I admire the school values that Hucknall Flying High Academy encourage ’independent learners, motivated by their natural curiosity’. I would very much like to uphold practice that caters to individual needs in order to allow children the best opportunity to reach their potential as well as set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils further. During University I have been introduced to many educationalists and theories and I would most certainly like to ensure that I am able to nurture and foster a love for learning by addressing children's interest to ensure children are able to engage when learning to create a positive and engaging environment.
I completed my degree as a BEd Primary Educator with a specialist in English which is applicable to both KS1 and KS2.
In order to develop my teaching skills, since my degree, I have spent the last year working for the agency Exeter Supply Partnership. This good-grounding experience has enabled me to have taught in a range of school settings including: rural, urban, small, large and faith schools. The experience has been incredibly insightful and has provided me with the opportunity to use my initiative and act decisively when necessary in a professional manner. I have been able to gain knowledge from experienced practitioners and have had the opportunity to observe many teaching, planning and behaviour strategies. After talking to fellow peers I have gained an understanding about classroom management and I have found positive praise to be an effective approach. I have also been able to demonstrate my subject and curricular knowledge across many year groups during this time and further develop and widen my knowledge in regards to the current National Curriculum.
As a teacher, I work hard to facilitate engaging lessons, which enable children to explore new concepts and experiences. I believe it is essential to provide children with the opportunity to learn through exploration and have been able to achieve this belief by planning imaginatively and creating lessons that set high expectations whilst meeting the needs of all learners, taking into account any SEND, children working at greater depth and children that are portraying age related expectations and can excel further with the correct apparatus. Thus putting that support in place to allow them to begin to independently apply the skills.
During my time in different school settings, I have consistently demonstrated my ability to plan imaginatively and deliver lessons with a range of content to develop a vibrant classroom environment, which is essential to ensure children are engaged and willing to learn. I am able to plan as part of a team and discuss and share planning and follow schools plans, curriculum as well as incorporate structures of work. In addition, I have observed teaching assistants and would navigate and held brief meetings in order to discuss the lesson plan and the specific focus I would like them to address in order to deploy support staff in an efficient manner. As a result of planning ahead I can be organised and prepare for any misconceptions or challenges that may arise. In addition, I found that when planning to teach online lessons, my approach had to involve being accessible to all children and I feel I achieved this by preparing and delivering packs and supplying laptops where necessary.
Whilst on placement at Sidmouth C of E Primary school, the school were preparing for an impending OFSTED inspection. I therefore have gained first - hand knowledge of preparing for inspection. During the staff meeting we reviewed the current approach towards assessment across the Key Stages and how imperative it is to ensure assessment is consistent throughout so the children are set relevant and achievable targets. It is essential to ensure that children experience a sense of adventure and curiosity including opportunities for questioning and talk partners through first hand practical experiences within the Early Years and Foundation Stage and an accurate and productive use of assessment can build on a child’s strengths and support how children learn. Accurate assessment and planning creates the core of all teaching and I have experience of completing observations, individual and whole class assessments. Therefore, I would regularly complete tracking sheets as I mark and use this data in order to monitor and understand how I can adapt my planning and identify and address any misconceptions for the following lessons. Throughout my time in different school settings, I have come across a range of methods for marking and have noticed this approach provides children with the opportunity to be responsible and reflective learners, particularly if they are able to visually and actively evaluate their progress too. Thus, as a teacher it is vital to complete marking and conferencing children regularly and to reflect upon lessons. As a result of making accurate and productive use of assessments children have the opportunity to recognise ways in which they can improve and further promote good progress and outcomes as well as develop a sense of ownership of their work. As a Class Teacher I have completed marking against the interim framework which required me to make professional judgements when providing comments and future targets, as well as Report writing and the way in which they are written to depict children's progress.
My specialist subject of English has provided me with further knowledge of children’s literature and how I can share my love of reading with children. In addition, I have developed an interest in phonics and reading for meaning, therefore my dissertation demonstrated how Early Year Teachers can support children to read for meaning and pleasure. The ability to comprehend a text is a transferable and lifelong skill and can be done through a variety of domains in this digital age today. Whilst at university I undertook research surrounding communication needs and how to effectively support language development in the classroom. Subsequently, I have gained a high-quality understanding of how I can differentiate my teaching to be accessible to all pupils.
Through working with pupils with a range of different needs, I have developed expectations of behaviour that I expect of all pupils. Behavioural expectations and learning objectives should be clear from the start and therefore by sharing a strong professional relationship with all support staff members the approach to teaching can be consistent within the classroom. Managing behaviour is one of my strengths as I am familiar with a range of systems, protocols and behaviour plans and as a result am confident with using schools’ behavioural policies to deploy a wide range of effective strategies. I feel confident with managing behaviour during out of class activities and trips. To maintain effective differentiation and a constant rate of progression amongst pupils, I have developed an understanding of the importance of assessment and monitoring. I am confident with carrying out effective assessment for learning, including using high-order questioning and providing feedback and intervention that informs pupils of their progress and next steps.
The past year I have had the opportunity of teaching both Year 1 and Year 2 at St Leonards C of E Primary School. I prepared the children for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Test and Year 2 for their Sats and by teaching Year 2 I was aware of what was expected of the Year 1 children in the following year. My experiences of teaching phonics include following the schools phonics syllabus and providing regular opportunities to apply the phonics they have learnt to reading fully decodable books. The class would take part in reading practice sessions which took place at least three times a week. Each reading practice session had a clear focus using a book matched to their secure phonic level to enable the children to read at 90% fluency. The reading practice sessions were designed to focus on three key reading skills, decoding, prosody – reading with meaning, stress and intonation and comprehension. I was able to incorporate different approaches to learning phonics ensuring every lesson was structured to impact on the children’s progress and learning in a meaningful manner through interactive games and drawing upon prior knowledge of phonics taught in Reception. By activating prior knowledge children are able to consolidate their pre-requisite knowledge and skills and support the movement of knowledge from short term memory to long term memory.
During my time at University, I have had the opportunity to participate in CPD opportunities relevant to the current National Curriculum. These include Mastery in Mathematics, Risk Assessment and an English Subject Leadership module. In addition, I took it upon myself to partake in online CPD training focused on the primary teaching of Science. Science was a subject area that I had identified myself as lacking confidence in thus, I aimed to improve. Now I have been able to use my in-depth subject knowledge and a range of creative teaching strategies to successfully teach science on my current placement. Overall, I strive to participate in CPD opportunities throughout my career. Since working with the Exeter Supply Agency I have read and addressed each safeguarding procedures the school adhere to and ensure I take it upon myself to regularly familiarise myself with the statutory guidance for schools on safeguarding children. tel: ***
Since having studied Primary ‘English’ my passion for English is an area I would like to be able to build upon and I would admire the opportunity to lead English as a subject one day. I would be committed to encourage ‘Reading for Pleasure’. Modelling a positive approach to reading is very powerful and I would be determined to encourage children to take an active interest in the ‘Harry Potter’ inspired library and discuss book recommendations and dedicate time to storytelling sessions. I have an interest for education and hope to inspire and broaden horizons. It is my long term goal to use education as the catalyst to inspire others to aspire, to re address the pre defined perceptions people hold and to break barriers that cause a divide in society such as class, finance and background. By providing a reading platform for children I am able to demonstrate a world of possibilities and experiences.
In addition, throughout my time I have shown myself to have grown in confidence and skill by having taken on board advice from my colleagues. With this being said, I believe my hardworking and determined attitude will equip me to become an active and contributing member of your team. I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter of application and would be delighted to discuss further at interview.
Many Kind Regards,
Simarjeet Singh. |
