Though I am a qualified music teacher, I have been teaching and tutoring Maths to children in year 5 to year 11 (GCSE) since 2007. I teach from the National Curriculum which coincides with subject matter needed for the 11+ and 13+ Maths related exams. I have an enhanced DBS and safe guarding certificate. Tutoring Experience I have taught and tutored Maths to children from a range of academic and socio economic backgrounds from the aforementioned years groups. As well as teaching and tutoring within mainstream educational environments, a substantial amount of my work with children has been done within alternative education. The children within this sector who I have taught, and at present tutor, are, in some cases, on the SEN register for issues such as Social, Emotional and Behaviour difficulties and ADHD. Others, though they do not have a SEN statement, have been school refusers and struggling with confidence issues. In all my teaching and tutoring experiences, many of the pupils I have worked with have achieved results that allowed them to progress to the next step in their lives. For instance, helping students get the grades to get into the collage of their choice, as well as facilitating students progress so they reach the next level they are aiming for in their academic studies. In some cases I understand what it means to be a constant and relaxed presence that has given struggling students confidence to complete a course they are undertaking, for example their Maths GCSE, and have something to show for it. Tutoring Approach I have always been passionate about helping students see the bigger picture behind their studies. As well as helping students enjoy Maths for its own sake, I endeavour to keep them motivated by bringing to light the wider benefits of studying maths, and how it fits into their over all life journey. I work to ensure that the sessions are tailor made for individual students; focusing on the problems that they want ironed out. I endeavour to break down concepts so they are more manageable and understandable. In this process I work to show what skills the students already have, and how they can turn to them for the tougher mathematical topics. Going through exam technique is also an important part of the sessions. There is a focus on how to answer questions within the time that is needed, and how to decode what is being required. |
