About Classical Piano

The piano is a stringed, acoustic instrument in which the strings are struck by small wooden hammers. It is played on a row of keys which the performer presses in order to make the hammers strike the strings. It was invented somewhere around the year 1700 in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori.

Most modern pianos consist of 88 black and white keys, from which 52 white and 36 shorter black keys, which are raised over the white ones. Classical pianos are split into two different types: grand piano and upright piano. The grand piano gives more control of the keys and notes to the performer, however it is also larger and more expensive. On the other hand, the upright piano is smaller and much more affordable which makes it a much more common choice for people even though it’s slightly lower quality in comparison.

Why should you learn how to play the piano?

Since its creation the piano has become one of the most widely played instruments in the world and there are good reasons as to why. First of all, the piano is a great instrument to choose if you’re starting at a young age because it helps with personal and creative development as a whole. It teaches concentration, because in order to remember things like notes, keys, tempos, songs etc, a person has to be fully focused in order to succeed. Furthermore it teaches discipline and commitment. If you want to become good at playing the piano it won’t happen overnight. It will take time and patience to slowly become better.

Creativity is another thing that improves alongside playing the piano. Once you reach a certain level, it will get easier to improvise and just have fun on your own without necessarily playing a memorised song. Last but not least, playing the piano is fun. It’s an instrument that you can enjoy on your own and it allows you to perform songs from pretty much any genre of music you like.

Is learning the classical piano difficult?

Although the piano is one of the most popular instruments, this doesn’t mean that it’s easy to learn. The first thing a new player needs to learn is that it can take a while. Learning the notes and keys won’t happen in a few days. So the first obstacle any player will have to learn is being consistent and not giving up.

Another thing to consider is if you want to learn on your own or with a teacher. It isn’t impossible to get good by yourself, however it will certainly make things more difficult. Having someone with experience guiding you can go a long way.

All in all, learning the piano isn’t an easy task, however if you’re dedicated and enjoy yourself throughout the process, it’ll be easier than expected and definitely well worth it!

Is it expensive to learn the piano?

This is a difficult question to answer because it entirely depends on how you decide to go about it. If you want to learn on your own you’ll have to buy a piano which won’t be cheap. There are cheap pianos available, however we wouldn’t recommend going for those ones. There are affordable models that can get the job done, however it will still require you making a small investment.

On the other hand, if you want to learn with a teacher, that might save you the hassle of buying a piano, at least in the beginning. You can find a teacher that has a piano and will let you practice and learn on it until you get one yourself. At TutorExtra you can find private lessons starting from around £13 and going up to around £40 depending on the teacher.
